The volume of cash continues to grow
It was in circulation at the beginning of 2026 UAH 926.3 billion cash The NBU notes that if the first quarter was traditionally characterized by withdrawal of cash from circulation, then in the second quarter the demand for it increased significantly.
The regulator explains this as a seasonal factor. A similar trend was observed last year, when the amount of cash also increased according to the results of the first half of 2025 — by 4.6%.
How many banknotes and coins are in circulation
As of July 1, the following were in circulation in Ukraine:
2.6 billion banknotes for the total amount UAH 960.7 billion;
15.3 billion coins (without commemorative and investment ones) for the amount UAH 9.9 billion.
On average, there is one resident of Ukraine 64 banknotes and 197 circulating and exchangeable coins. At the beginning of the year, this figure was 64 banknotes and 193 coins.
What are the most common banknotes
The largest share among banknotes is occupied by denomination notes 500 hryvnias — they constitute 25.8% from the total amount.
The smallest denomination of banknotes in circulation 50 hryvnias - only 4.5%.
At the same time, the number of denomination bills is growing the fastest 1,000 hryvnias. In the first half of the year, their share increased by 1.8 percentage points and reached 20% from the total number of banknotes.
By the total value of the banknote at face value 1,000 hryvnias already provide more than 55% of all cash in circulation.
