Poland exported €14.1 billion worth of goods to Ukraine: the trade surplus reached €9.7 billion

Poland increased its exports to Ukraine by almost three times

According to the report of the Bank of National Economy of Poland (BGK), in May 2026, Polish exports of goods to Ukraine reached €14.1 billion against €5.2 billion at the end of 2020. This is about 169% more.

Delo reports on the results of the study with reference to the report of the Polish bank. The growth of trade took place against the background of a full-scale war and increased needs of Ukraine in energy resources, military products and equipment.

At the same time, the import of goods from Ukraine to Poland increased by approximately 72% — from €2.5 billion to €4.4 billion. Thus, Polish exports increased much faster, and the positive trade balance between Poland and Ukraine reached €9.7 billion.

Poland provides almost a third of EU exports to Ukraine

In May 2026, it was Poland's turn 29.5% of the export of goods from the countries of the European Union to Ukraine. For comparison, Germany's share was 18.5%.

At the same time, the role of the Ukrainian market in Poland's foreign trade has increased. If at the end of 2020, Ukraine provided 2.2% of total Polish exports, then in May 2026 this indicator reached 3.8%.

These data indicate the strengthening of trade relations between the countries and the growing importance of Ukraine for Polish exporters.

Energy resources and electricity became the main drivers

One of the main reasons for the growth of Polish exports was energy resources and electricity. Their deliveries to Ukraine increased by approx €100 million at the end of 2020 to €2.7 billion in May 2026.

Arms and ammunition, aircraft and aviation equipment also became important areas. These categories accounted for about 12.5% of Polish exports to Ukraine after the start of the full-scale Russian invasion.

In the segment of weapons, ammunition and aviation products, Poland provided 44.9% of the corresponding export of EU countries to the Ukrainian market.

Other goods that Poland supplies to Ukraine include telecommunications equipment, passenger cars, industrial equipment, electrical appliances and fertilizers.

In the trade of agricultural products, the advantage is on the side of Ukraine

Unlike the general trade in goods, in the agri-food segment, Poland imports more products from Ukraine than it exports to the Ukrainian market.

In May 2026, agro-food products amounted to 33.3% of Ukrainian exports to Poland. At the same time, Poland's deficit in this category has significantly decreased: if in March 2023 it exceeded €1.6 billion, then in May 2026 it amounted to about €309 million.

Consequently, Ukraine maintains an important position on the Polish agro-food market, although the overall balance of trade remains in favor of Poland.

Poland remains one of Ukraine's key trade partners

Poland occupies an important place among suppliers of goods to the Ukrainian market. According to the given data, in the nine months of 2026, Ukraine imported goods for $75.1 billion, and Poland remained one of the main trade partners of the country.

The increase in supplies of energy resources, industrial equipment and military products reflects changes in the structure of Ukrainian demand. For Poland, this means expanding the sales market, while for Ukraine, it means access to important goods for energy, defense and economy.

At the same time, Poland's significant trade surplus shows that the volumes of Ukrainian exports to the neighboring country are not yet growing at the same pace as Polish supplies to Ukraine.
