Google Play removed VK, Mail.ru and the Max messenger: Russian services fell under sanctions restrictions

Sanctions are gradually isolating Russian digital services

The removal of the apps was the result of sanctions that the European Union recently imposed on the company VK and the legal entity responsible for the development of the messenger Max. After that, Google limited the distribution of relevant services through its official store.

Not only the flagship VK application was blocked, but also other services of the company's ecosystem — "Classmates", "Zen" and Mail.ru. As such, Android users can no longer install or update these apps through Google Play.

VK confirmed the disappearance of applications from the store and said that already installed programs continue to work. The company recommends downloading them through alternative application stores or from its own resources.

Max was to become a Russian alternative to Telegram and WhatsApp

Messenger attracts special attention Max, which the Russian authorities actively promoted as a replacement for Western platforms. The beta version of the service was introduced in the spring of 2025, after which it began to be integrated into state digital services and promoted as the main national messenger.

Its development took place against the background of the Kremlin's attempts to strengthen control over the information space and reduce dependence on international platforms, primarily Telegram and WhatsApp. That is why the sanctions against the Max developer were a blow to one of the key digital projects of the Russian government.

According to the media, the application is also currently unavailable in the store Huawei AppGallery, which further limits the possibilities of its distribution.

What does this mean

Removing applications from Google Play does not mean a complete cessation of their work, but it significantly complicates the development of these services. Without an official store, it's more difficult for users to install updates, and new audiences actually lose the easiest way to access apps.

For Russian technology companies, this means further isolation from the global digital ecosystem. At the same time, international platforms show a willingness to implement sanction decisions, even if it is about large services with tens of millions of users. For the market, this is another signal that sanctions pressure is increasingly spreading not only to the financial or industrial sectors, but also to digital infrastructure and technology companies.
