The EU has agreed to the largest one-time expansion of sanctions against Russia since the start of the full-scale war

More than 1,600 people and companies will be sanctioned

1,646 individuals and legal entities. The main part of those involved is connected with the Russian military-industrial complex.

According to Reuters, approx 1,570 individuals and organizations in the new list have connections with the defense industry of Russia. More than half of them are related to the production of rockets.

Thus, the EU focused another expansion of sanctions not only on political representatives of Russia, but also on enterprises and individuals involved in the production of weapons and the provision of the Russian military sector.

Representatives of the occupation authorities will be punished separately

They should also be included in the new sanctions list 77 deputies, who were "elected" in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine during the September elections to the State Duma of Russia.

Their inclusion in the list is part of the EU's policy of non-recognition of Russian actions on occupied Ukrainian territories. Sanction restrictions should apply to representatives whose actions contribute to the legitimization of Russian control over the captured territories.

The final decision must be taken by the ministers of the EU countries

The approval of the ambassadors is an important stage, but it does not yet mean the final entry into force of the package.

After the agreement of the representatives of the member states, the package should be submitted for approval by the ministers of foreign affairs of the EU. According to the published plan, the final decision is expected On October 12, at a meeting of heads of diplomatic departments in Luxembourg.

The unanimity of all member states remains fundamentally important for the EU's sanctions policy, so the agreement on new restrictions is often accompanied by lengthy negotiations between countries.

The new package demonstrates a shift in focus to companies and people directly linked to Russia's ability to continue the war.

This time, the scale of the list is largely explained by the expansion of sanctions against the Russian defense and industrial complex.

European diplomats previously estimated the future package at about Reuters called it the largest set of new sanctions since Russia began a full-scale invasion in 2022.

Sanctions remain one of the key tools of EU pressure

If the package is finally approved on October 12, понад 1600 нових фігурантів will be added to the European sanctions system. The largest part of the list will fall on the Russian military-industrial complex, which indicates the EU's intention to increasingly concentrate restrictions on the structures that ensure the continuation of the war.
