The volume of construction works for the year decreased by almost 10%
За даними Державної служби статистики України, упродовж перших восьми місяців 2026 року обсяг виконаних будівельних робіт зменшився на 9.9% in annual terms.
In general, the cost of manufactured construction products during this period reached UAH 156.5 billion. The negative dynamics covered all three main directions of the industry: residential and non-residential construction, as well as construction of engineering structures.
This shows that the reduction was not limited to the housing sector, but also affected infrastructure projects.
Engineering construction showed the biggest drop
In January–August, the volume of work on the construction of engineering structures decreased the most — by 13.7% compared to the same period in 2025.
In non-residential construction, the fall was 6.3%, while the residential segment shrank by 3.8%.
Thus, residential construction showed a relatively smaller decline than other major areas. At the same time, its figures also remain lower than last year, indicating a lack of overall growth in the industry over the past eight months.

In August, construction fell by 3.7% over the year
If we compare only August 2026 with August last year, the total volume of construction work decreased by 3.7%.
The most difficult situation remained in engineering construction, where the indicator fell to 12.2%. Housing construction decreased by 2.3%.
At the same time, the non-residential segment demonstrated positive dynamics: the volume of work increased by 9.8% in annual terms.
Therefore, although the overall result remains negative, individual categories of construction already show excellent dynamics. In particular, non-residential objects became the only one of the three main areas where growth was recorded in August compared to the corresponding month of 2025.
Compared to July, the volume of construction increased by 12.9%
The monthly dynamics turned out to be much more positive. In August, the volume of construction works increased by 12.9% compared to July 2026.
The largest growth was recorded in non-residential construction — at 25.3%. In the segment of engineering structures, volumes increased by 8.8%, and in residential construction - by 0.2%.
However, the monthly increase does not mean that the industry has fully recovered. The comparison with the previous month shows a short-term change in activity, while the annual dynamics reflect the situation relative to the corresponding period of the previous year.
What do the data show, taking into account seasonality
According to the State Statistics Service, after eliminating seasonal fluctuations, the August construction level was 62% of the average level in the residential segment, 155% in the non-residential segment, and 112% in engineering construction.
Taking into account the calendar factor, the indicators were equal, respectively 63.1%, 156.5% and 115.4%.
These indices characterize the level of activity in relation to the corresponding average base of comparison, and not the share of each direction in the total volume of construction works.
The data indicate a significant difference between the segments: non-residential construction shows higher index values, while the residential direction remains well below the average level used for the calculation.
What new construction, repair and reconstruction account for
According to the structure of the completed works given in the statistical data for July 2026, 44.6% of the total volume accounted for new construction.
Yet 30.3% were repair works, and 25.1% — reconstruction and other types of construction activities.
Therefore, new construction remains the largest single category, but more than half of the work is made up of repair, reconstruction and other works. This is important for assessing the structure of the industry, because the total volume of construction covers not only the construction of new facilities.
The market remains below pre-war indicators
Despite the recovery of certain areas in 2025 and the growth of monthly indicators in the second quarter of 2026, the market of new residential construction in Ukraine is still significantly inferior to pre-war volumes.
The outlook for the industry is also affected by the need to rebuild damaged infrastructure, renew the housing stock and modernize building standards. In Ukraine, in particular, new state building regulations for residential buildings are being developed, which must take into account the requirements of safety, accessibility, comfort and noise insulation.
According to the results of January-August 2026, the construction industry remains in the recession zone: the total volume of work decreased by 9.9%. At the same time, the growth in August compared to July and the positive dynamics of non-residential construction indicate the uneven movement of certain market segments. To assess a sustainable recovery, it is necessary to monitor further monthly and annual indicators.
