What will change?
It is not about a visible inscription like "this text was created by AI". There will be a mark built directly into the content structure, so the user will not see it during normal viewing.
According to Anthropic, such labeling should help determine the origin of content even after it has been copied. The company is also working on tools that will allow third-party services to check for watermarks.
The innovation applies to texts and files created by Claude on Anthropic platforms.
Why is this necessary?
The main goal is make the use of AI more transparent. As artificial intelligence is increasingly used to write texts, create documents and work with information, it becomes more difficult to determine where the human work ends and the generation of AI begins.
Anthropic links the innovation to EU transparency requirements for artificial intelligence. For Claude models launched in the European Union from August 2026, machine-readable labeling is supported by default. For older models, it is planned to be added gradually.
Does the watermark mean that the entire text was written by AI
No. And this is an important point.
Claude can be used not to create material from scratch, but, for example, to translate, edit, shorten or format text that was originally written by a person.
Therefore, the marking itself does not prove that all material was created by artificial intelligence. It can only indicate that Claude worked with this content in some way.
Can I remove the watermark?
The system is designed to keep the mark after normal copying and partial editing. However, she is not invulnerable.
Deep paraphrasing, significant truncation of text, or removal of digital metadata during file conversion can destroy markup.
That is, it is not an absolute method of determining AI content, but an additional technical mechanism for its identification.
What this means for users
For an ordinary user, the changes are almost imperceptible: Claude will not add large text or visible marks to answers.
At the same time, in the future, such a system can become important for media, education, business and other areas where it is necessary to understand the origin of digital content.
In fact, Anthropic is moving toward a model in which AI content will have a kind of digital "footprint", which can be verified by technical means. This does not eliminate the problem of massive use of AI to create content, but it makes its origin potentially more transparent.
