Ukrainian winemaking is recovering: grape processing increased by 25%

Processing of grapes has moved to growth

Last year, Ukrainian winemakers processed 40 thousand tons of grapesthat on 25.4% morethan a year earlier. This was the first significant signal of recovery after a long recession. Although during 2019–2025, the average annual reduction in recycling was close to 24%, the results of 2025 indicate a change in the negative trend.

The area of ​​vineyards is still decreasing

Despite improved production figures, vineyard acreage remains under pressure. The biggest losses were recorded in 2022-2023, when they decreased by 20.9% and 23.9% in accordance.

In 2024, the industry partially recovered — the area increased by 6.6%, however, already in 2025, plantations of technical grapes have decreased by 1%, and the areas under table varieties decreased immediately by 44%.

Which regions remain leaders

They remain the main centers of Ukrainian viticulture Odesa, Mykolaiv and Transcarpathian regions.

Odesa region holds the first place with areas of approx 9 thousand hectares and the largest gross harvest of grapes. Mykolaiv region shows the highest yield among the leading regions - almost 50 centners per hectare, while Transcarpathia, despite its smaller area, retains an important role in grape production.

Which varieties showed the best results

Varieties were the most resistant to area reduction Aligote, Rkatsiteli, Chardonnay, Saperavi Northern and Odessa Black — their plantations have decreased by less than 15%.

At the same time, the highest sugar content in 2025 was recorded in varieties Traminer Rosé, Sauvignon, Merlot, Odessa Black and Cabernet Sauvignon, which is an important indicator of the quality of wine materials.

What wines are produced most often

The basis of Ukrainian production is table wines, which accounts for 68.3% total volume. Almost 25% production is occupied by wine materials for sparkling wines, which indicates a stable demand for these products.

The state continues to support the industry

Since the beginning of 2026, the state has adopted 42 solutions regarding the financing of the development of horticulture, viticulture and greenhouse farming for a total amount UAH 215.4 million. Of them UAH 89 million aimed at supporting horticulture, berry growing and viticulture.

In addition, they entered into force at the beginning of the year updated rules for producers of grapes and wine products, which, in particular, strengthen the protection of geographical indications and should contribute to the further development of Ukrainian winemaking.
