Why does the appearance of a 2000 hryvnia bill not affect inflation
As explained by the vice-president of the Association of Ukrainian Banks and the chairman of the board "Globus Bank" Sergey Mamedov, issuing a new banknote does not increase the total amount of money in the economy.
Actually one banknote in denomination 2000 hryvnias completely replaces two bills 1000 hryvnias. The total amount of money remains unchanged — only the number of banknotes needed for cash settlements changes.
According to the banker, inflation occurs when the money supply grows faster than the production of goods and services. By itself, the new denomination does not create additional funds and does not affect the price level.
Why was there a need for a new banknote?
The need to enter a banknote 2000 hryvnias is explained by the changes that occurred after the denomination of the banknote appeared 1000 hryvnias in 2019.
During this time:
-загальний рівень цін збільшився майже вдвічі;
- the amount of cash in circulation increased from about UAH 390 billion to over UAH 970 billion as of July 1, 2026.
Сьогодні понад 55% усієї готівки за сумою falls precisely on banknotes with a denomination of 1,000 hryvnias. This indicates that the largest note is already being used as actively as possible, and the existing banknote series needs to be updated.
The new denomination corresponds to the historical value of the hryvnia
Serhii Mamedov also drew attention to the currency equivalent of the largest Ukrainian banknotes in different years.
For comparison:
- in in 1996 bill 100 hryvnias answered approximately 57 US dollars;
- in in 2019 bill 1000 hryvnias cost about 40 dollars;
- a banknote 2000 hryvnias at a conditional rate UAH 45 per dollar will be approximately 44 US dollars.
Thus, the largest denomination of the hryvnia remains approximately in the same range of purchasing power as before.
What advantages will the 2000 hryvnia banknote give?
The introduction of the new denomination will make cash circulation cheaper and more convenient.
Main advantages:
- the number of banknotes needed for large payments will decrease;
- costs for printing new banknotes will be reduced;
- costs for collection, transportation and storage of cash will decrease;
- processing of banknotes in banks and retail chains will be simplified;
- costs for the disposal of worn bills will decrease.
What actually depends on the stability of the hryvnia
Experts emphasize that the exchange rate of the national currency and the level of inflation are determined by completely different factors.
Among the main ones:
- inflation rates;
- the state of the Ukrainian economy;
- balanced state budget;
- volume of international financial assistance;
- the level of international currency reserves;
It is these factors that affect the purchasing power of the hryvnia, while the appearance of a new banknote is only a technical update of cash circulation.
